Why Mobile Coverage Should Be Considered During Building Design

Mobile coverage is rarely on the design brief for a new building — structural, fire, electrical, hydraulic and data services all get planned in detail, while mobile phone reception is assumed to ‘just work.’ For an increasing number of modern buildings, it doesn’t.

The Cost of Leaving It Until After Handover

When coverage is addressed only after residents complain, the fix has to work around a finished building:

  • Cabling must be retrofitted through completed walls, ceilings and risers rather than run alongside other services during the build
  • Equipment rooms have to be found in whatever space remains, rather than allocated up front
  • Strata or body corporate committees are left managing the cost, approvals and disruption of remedial works
  • The building’s reputation can suffer before the fix is even underway, particularly if complaints surface during initial sales or leasing

What Changes When It’s Considered at Design Stage

Involving a coverage specialist during design — alongside the architect, electrical consultant and building services consultant — allows:

  • Antenna and equipment cabling to be run through the same risers, ceiling voids and service shafts as other trades
  • Equipment room space to be allocated on the floor plan before construction begins
  • The system to be sized correctly for the building’s actual floor plan and construction materials, rather than estimated after the fact
  • Multi-carrier support (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone) to be built in from the outset, at minimal incremental cost compared with retrofitting later

Where This Fits in a Project Timeline

A site survey and coverage design can typically run in parallel with other design-stage services — the initial assessment doesn’t require a completed structure, only confirmed building plans and construction materials. Carrier validation (confirming the design meets Telstra, Optus and Vodafone network requirements) is completed before installation, so the building’s coverage system is compliant from day one rather than approved after the fact.

Who This Applies To

  • Architects incorporating building services into early design
  • Electrical and building services consultants scoping cabling and plant requirements
  • Developers managing overall project risk and post-handover defect exposure
  • Builders sequencing trades and services through the build program
